By DAVID TAYLOR | Wendy Taylor has always been spicy and her zest for living life hasn’t changed since she was in high school. “I always wanted to stand out,” she said. Even as a football player on the seventh and eighth grade team in middle school, Taylor’s willingness to go the extra mile has played in her favor. As she entered high school, she began to focus more on her appetite for music. She earned the First Division medals at UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest and participated in the choir experience. “I learned a lot in those classes,” she said. “I now know the difference between a quality voice and an amateur one,” she said. She said she was always lucky to have amazing choral directors who took an interest in their students. Wendy Musachia was the first director to influence her in the Huffman school system. Then she had Greta Bryant, who now teaches her children. Her high school director, Christi Bean, really stood out to her. “Christi Bean is one of the sweetest human beings. She was always uplifting and supportive,” Taylor said. “She would take what she had and made it better. She had a way of pointing out your weak spots without making you feel like they were a weakness and work through those. She had a beautiful voice and a passion for singing.” Taylor said you could tell she loved her kids, and they loved her in return. “She made me a better singer, bar none. It’s one thing to have raw talent and another to work on your trade. She showed me how to work on my voice,” Taylor said. Following graduation, Taylor attended San Jacinto College until she married into the military. “We moved all … Continue reading
Wendy Taylor Aims Beyond Houston
WENDY TAYLOR AIMS BEYOND HOUSTON SEPTEMBER 14, 2011 Taylor-made for singing: Wendy Taylor has a big, booming personality that’s matched only by her big, booming voice. She’s likely to give you a bear hug and laugh hysterically at an off-color joke before piercing through the crowd with a soulful ballad or a high-energy pop tune. “I’ve been singing as long as I can remember,” Taylor says. She has sparkling blue eyes, a shock of red hair and a commanding, throaty speaking voice. “I have never in my life wanted to do anything but music. From the first time someone asked me as a toddler what I wanted to do, I knew.” Others have taken notice. The Houston native on American Idol (Season 10) earlier this year and was a finalist in the local Pride SuperSTAR competition. Think Bette Midler’s brashness, Pink’s fierceness and a touch of Aretha Franklin’s soul, all in one voluptuous package. “I definitely admire Bette Midler. The woman can sing anything, and she is hilarious,” Taylor says. “I have a lot of respect for the careers of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Cher and Elvis. I would love to have a legacy like that.” It’s a tall order, but Taylor is relentless. She auditioned for The Voice last month but didn’t make the cut. And when Idol returned to Houston for the first time in eight years just a few weeks ago, Taylor stood in line with friends for another shot. She has “no comment” about how she fared this time around — which seems to bode well. (Contestants who make it past the first few rounds are prohibited from talking about it.) The new season debuts in January, so keep your eyes peeled. “There is a lot that people watching do not see. Being a part of the … Continue reading

Posted: Friday, February 18, 2011 12:00 am By DAVID TAYLOR | They say three times is a charm. It was for a local Huffman woman who auditioned for her third time for “American Idol,” but this time she received the thumbs up to advance and now she’s headed to Hollywood. While Wendy Taylor is prohibited by the show from releasing many of the details, she was willing to sit down with The Observer, her hometown newspaper, and talk about her experiences so far. She talked briefly about her first two appearances. “They were complimentary and told me they thought I was very professional and a great singer, but I just wasn’t what they were looking for at the time,” she said. While she was disappointed and discouraged, she didn’t give up her dream. Recently she traveled to Austin for the “Idol” auditions and found a different outcome. “They really liked me. The entire experience so far has been better than anything I could ever imagine,” she said. “The whole staff, everyone that works at ‘Idol’ has been so much fun. It’s like a room full of love,” she smiled. The auditions are brutal. Most often, singers only get 15 to 30 seconds to showcase their talent. “I sang ‘Sober’ by Pink and then they asked me to sing another song and I sang ‘I’m the Only One’ by Melissa Etheridge,” Taylor said. The judges loved her and invited her to Hollywood. “I was completely myself and hoped they would like my chops. Steven Tyler was a trip,” she said. “All three of them gave me great compliments and were kind.” The days following the audition have been a whirlwind for the mother of three. She’s made appearances on “Access Hollywood” (three times), been on the front page of TMZ and has also been interviewed by numerous … Continue reading
